Motorola Announces Xoom 2 and Xoom 2 Media Edition Tablets

Motorola has announced the successors to their highly successful Xoom tablet. The two latest editions of this tablet include Motorola Xoom 2 and Xoom 2 Media Edition.

While Xoom 2 does not have any major updates from the original tablet to boot, the only differences are a slightly better processor, 3D virtual surround sound and a leaner frame.

Both Xoom 2 and Xoom 2 Media Edition are powered by a 1.2GHz dual core processor with 1GB RAM and run on Android 3.2 Honeycomb operating system. They feature the same cameras as well – a 5 megapixel rear-facing HD camera with digital zoom, autofocus & LED flash and a 1.3 megapixel front camera for video calling.

As regards the storage capacity, both these tablets come with 16GB internal storage. The main difference is that of display size; while Xoom 2 boasts a 10.1-inch HD display with Corning Gorilla Glass, the media edition sports a relatively smaller 8.2-inch HD display with the same screen quality.

Also, there is a significant difference in the sizes and weights of the tablets, with Xoom 2 weighing 586 grams and the Media Edition being much lighter at just 386 grams.

Both the Motorola Xoom 2 and the Xoom 2 Media Edition will be available from mid-November in UK and Ireland via Carphone Warehouse. The release dates for other countries are not known yet.

Is your Android Phone ready for Ice Cream Sandwich v4.0?

The next-generation of Android – Ice Cream Sandwich has been released but the question that remains unanswered is whether this new version is compatible with all Android phones out there. Well, theoretically, all the phones which currently have Android v2.3 Gingerbread installed can work with this new version but there is a possibility that your phone might not be able to make the most of ICS because of improper hardware configuration.

There are several new features in Android v4.0 ICS which might create some fuss in older Android phones:-

Hardware Accelerated Graphics

By this time, you’d have heard only of dedicated graphics (or GPU) which enhances the graphics processing of your Smartphone but ICS uses your phone’s hardware to enhance visual performance. If you thought that your phone’s graphics performance can’t get better, just by upgrading it to ICS would notably improve its visual performance.

Virtual Buttons Only

Android Smartphones which are currently available in market have 4 basic navigation buttons; some phones have virtual capacitive touch buttons while some use physical keys. ICS has virtual buttons which can be customized, so, if you are going to port ICS onto a device that already has physical keys, you’d have 4 operating physical keys and customizable touch buttons.

capacitive touch buttons

By the way, this would decrease the size of touchscreen available for operating. Samsung Galaxy Nexus Prime, which is the flagship ICS phone from Google has a huge 4.65-inch touchscreen display, it maybe because of this only.

Zero Shutter Lag-time

Android phones available in market either have a physical camera shutter (which I personally prefer using) or virtual shutter button built inside the camera app. Well, basically, ICS offers zero shutter lag time which means that your photos get clicked the very instant you hit the shutter key.

If your phone doesn’t have a physical shutter button, you wouldn’t have any problem with ICS but if you have physical shutter key, there might be a lag time in capturing photos (it is basically depends on the hardware of your phone).

Samsung Galaxy S2 has a shutter key built-in the camera app and also it has superb hardware, it would definitely work brilliant with Android v4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

Face-recognition Unlock Option

This is an awesome feature if you want to keep people away from your confidential data. Although, password apps work fine but this is the next-generation of Smartphone data security. Anyways, if your Android phone has a front-facing camera, this feature won’t bug you.

Conclusion

As of now, it is not very clear which old Cell Phones would be compatible with ICS. Not many manufacturers have revealed the list of handsets for which they would release ICS updates. The best you can do right now is either to enjoy what you have and wait for official announcements from your phone’s manufacturer.

By the way, Android v4.0 ICS would be available very soon but I won’t recommend you to upgrade instantly, it might not be very stable and may make your phone non-responsive. It is better to wait for an official update.

Samsung launches Galaxy Note in India at 35k

Samsung has just launched Galaxy Note at a press event in New Delhi. The tablet phone has been priced at Rs. 34990 with free cover for first 1000 customers.

There were few questions asked by the media on the actual use of this device. It certainly confuses the users whether its a tablet or a mobile phone. Currently Galaxy Nexus has the biggest display of 4.65″ in smartphones followed by Galaxy S II with 4.3″ screen.

HTC Radar 4G with Windows Phone Mango Available at T-Mobile USA

Wireless carrier T-Mobile USA has just made HTC Radar 4G available for purchase through its website, making it the first Windows Phone Mango device in the U.S. Although the phone is all set to hit the stores on November 2, T-mobile has surprised everyone by letting customers order the phone online two days in advance.

The phone runs on Windows Phone 7.5 Mango operating system and is powered by a fast 1 GHz Snapdragon processor with 512MB RAM. It sports a 3.8-inch WVGA display with 800 X 480 pixels and comes packed with impressive features including a 5-megapixel rear autofocus camera with LED flash and 720p HD video recording, VGA front camera for Skype video calling, integrated A-GPS with navigation, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

Apart from supporting 4G network, the device also provides access to SkyDrive along with 25GB free cloud storage. It comes pre-installed with T-Mobile TV, Tango video calling apps, Internet Explorer 9 and social networking integration. However the only downside is the rather disappointing 8GB internal storage.

If you are interested in buying this stylish smartphone, you’ll have to shell out a nominal amount of $99 (after a $50 mail-in rebate) and agree to sign a two-year contract with T-Mobile. However the phone is also available without the contract for a rather hefty sum of $649.99.
